The LEGO Movie Videogame won't hold too many surprises for long-term fans of the series, yet the developers have experimented with some new ideas, such as a block-matching mini-game that has players identifying individual LEGO pieces against the clock. Levels are something of a mixed bag, ranging from the rich and colourful Cloud Cuckoo Land to the mundanity of a construction site, but exploration usually feels rewarding given that unearthing hidden loot takes you a step closer to unlocking some of the bonus characters. Having to switch between three or more characters to solve some of the game's more complex conundrums begins to feel tedious after a while, though this is a criticism that dates back as far as the original LEGO Star Wars. These puzzles aren't particularly challenging, as the solutions nearly always involve smashing or rebuilding something nearby with visual cues to help you along, but this at least makes The LEGO Movie Videogame accessible to younger players. While the game swerves many of the pitfalls of your average movie adaptation, converting a 100-minute film into a much longer, interactive piece of work makes the experience feel drawn out in places.Д¬ombat largely consists of mindless button bashing, but is occasionally fun and therapeutic, while puzzle solving typically involves using several characters' abilities in conjunction with one another.ДЇor instance, Emmet is equipped with a pneumatic drill that can be used to deconstruct parts of the environment, allowing other team members to use their unique skills to fashion the debris into a scalable platform. Players start out controlling everyman-turned-hero Emmet, but soon find themselves with a small army at their disposal, as the likes of Batman, Superman and Gandalf from Lord of the Rings later join the fray. TT Games was apparently reluctant to alter what has been a winning formula for them in the past, and although it has lost some of its sheen after so many instalments, a memorable roster of playable characters helps keep the game fresh. The LEGO Movie Videogame takes the majority of its gameplay cues from the previous LEGO videogames, combining block-smashing combat with platforming and puzzle segments.
